Back to the Cross

Back to the Cross
by Chip Brogden
Apart from the Cross, we do not know
what Resurrection is.

Religion seeks to reform a man; the Cross seeks to crucify him. Religion may fail to bring about the desired result, but the Cross never fails to achieve its end. Mankind will pursue morality, virtue, spirituality, even perform religious works and good deeds, in order to avoid death on a Cross. But there are no wounds, no scars, no evidence of having ever died and been made alive unto God. Either a man has never died, or he has died and been raised again. You cannot fake a resurrection.

The Cross is the means by which God reduces us to Christ, that we may be raised to new Life. What cannot be accomplished in a lifetime of self-effort is easily accomplished in God through the Cross. We may take many shortcuts along the way and attempt to escape the inevitable, but the day we cease striving and meekly accept the Cross we find everything is done for us...

C.S. LEWIS ON THE INERRANCY OF SCRIPTURE:

C.S. LEWIS ON THE INERRANCY OF SCRIPTURE:

"My own position is not Fundamentalist if Fundamentalism means accepting as a point of faith at the outset the proposition 'Every statement in the Bible is completely true in the literal, historical sense'. That would break down at once on the parables.

All the same common sense and general understanding of literary kinds which would forbid anyone to take the parables as historical statements, carried a very little further, would force us to distinguish between

(1.) Books like Acts or the account of David's reign, which are everywhere dovetailed into a known history, geography, and genealogies,

(2.) Books like Esther, or Jonah or Job which deal with otherwise unknown characters living in unspecified periods, and pretty well proclaim themselves to be sacred fiction.

Such distinctions are not new. Calvin left the historicity of Job an open question and from earlier, St. Jerome said that the whole Mosaic account of creation was done 'aftejus.

Of course, I believe the composition, presentation, and selection for inclusion in the Bible, of all books to have been guided by the Holy Ghost. But I think he meant us to have sacred myth and sacred fiction as well as sacred history."

— C.S. Lewis, in a letter dated 5 October 1955

THE FOUR FOLD MINISTRY

THE FOUR FOLD MINISTRY
Ephesians 4:11-13 explains the reason for the ministry functions of the ekklesia.
Why do we keep getting it wrong?
Personal agendas and control seem to rule the day.

Gritty Compassion - DEVOTIONAL

Gritty Compassion
Theme of the Week: True Compassion
Tuesday, June 27, 2017

Key Bible Verse: I saw the tears of the oppressed, with no one to comfort them. (Ecclesiastes 4:1b)

Dig Deeper: Luke 10:25-37

That day in the car, I was torn between an easy Jesus and the real Jesus. The easy Jesus hears our prayers for grieving families and lets us go about our business. But the real Jesus messes with our hearts by asking us to act on the compassion we feel welling up inside us. It's not that feeling pity and praying for someone in need is necessarily wrong. It just isn't complete.

A Place for the Lord,by Chip Brogden

"Foxes have their dens, and birds have their nests;
but the Son of Man has no where to lay His head."
-Matthew 8:20

How may we prepare a place for the Lord Jesus? What is He searching for? Where is the place of His rest?

Many of us have traveled "outside the camp" in search of something more in tune with God's own heart. I believe the most important calling we have is to prepare a place for the Lord Jesus, to give Him somewhere to lay His head. We will find that the purest, simplest expression of the Church is that which satisfies the Lord's heart and gives Him a place....

Teaching...

"If you would have your son to walk honourably through the world, you must not attempt to clear the stones from his path, but teach him to walk firmly over them - not insist upon leading him by the hand, but let him learn to go alone."

COMING SOON!

I read a book many years ago that impacted my walk with God in greater
ways than I ever realized.
To this day, the lessons and perspectives I received from this
publication has helped me filter through the ever shifting, watered down
"Christianity" we see in today's "church."
The book: "Life and Teachings of Jesus" by T. Franklin Miller
The lesson: Look beyond the "pulpit" for your answers; Find out WHO
wrote what to whom; WHEN was it written; WHAT were the circumstances
surrounding the writings; Pray for guidance from God in teaching the
life of Jesus to the next generation.
Sadly, without a major MOVE OF GOD, this generation is lost.
But...Stay tuned!
In the next few weeks, we will explore the lessons God gave me as well
as share with each other how we can apply them to our walk today and
into the future.

THOUGHT FOR TODAY - 02/08/2017

What Is the meaning of life?
The parable of the farmer scattering seed is one of the best-known of Jesus' teaching parables. Jesus told parables for two reasons:
(1) to help us understand the heart of God; and
(2) to help us understand how things work in the kingdom of God.
In this parable, he is describing the true meaning of our life: to cultivate a heart that is receptive to hearing and accepting the redemptive message of Jesus' death and resurrection, then to live a life that produces a huge harvest that can "feed" a multitude.

Our lives are intended to be a source of life-giving "nutrition" for everyone around us, and the only way we can produce that kind of fruit is to provide "good soil" for the "seeds" God wants to plant in us. The meaning of our life, according to Jesus, is to do whatever it takes to continually offer him "fertile soil"—to give ourselves to understanding him and his kingdom, to continuously deepen our soul by pursuing the truth about ourselves and about God, and to set aside our worries and our material ambitions so that we trust God above all.
